Shawn Lawler Wins His First
The Winged Warriors of SCoNE (Sprint Cars of New England) flew into Rattlesnake Motordrome www.rattlesnakemotordrome.50webs.com on Saturday evening for their fourth race of the 2009 season. There were 9 of these alcohol gulping, fire breathing, 360 cubic inch cars on hand. Racing started promptly at 6:00 pm as advertised and the rain held off for the evening.
Matt Shuart (18F) again made the five hour trip from NY to race with us. Thanks Matt. I also want to mention the hard work and generosity of Mike Kondrat of Kondrat Kustoms. Mike loaned a motor to Shawn Lawler (18L) and installed it, allowing Shawn to race the last two weeks. Thank you, Mike.
The track surface was an average dirt track for the start of the heats. In the first heat the #38 of Bob Giuliani and the #58 of Clay Dow got hooked together midway down the front stretch and ended up in the banking off turn one in a really spectacular crash. I was in the turn one stands and parts and dirt were raining down. Thankfully no one was hurt but both cars were done for the night. I found out later, Clay’s car was done for good with a bent and broken frame. Bob’s car had a lot of damage but is repairable.
Finishing order for the 1st heat:
1st was the #18L of Shawn Lawler, 2nd the 11 of Tunk Berry, and 3rd the 9 of Robby Bodwell. The 58 of Clay Dow and the 38 of Bob Giuliani were 4th and 5th with mechanical problems.
Finishing order for the 2nd heat:
1st was the 17 of Si Allen, 2nd the 10 of Bruce Kimball, 3rd the 18F of Matt Shuart and 4th the 5 of Mike Kondrat.
SCoNE had 7 cars to start the feature. Some grader work was done during intermission and the track was again an average track providing enough grip for some passing.
For the feature, Shawn started on the inside pole with Si to the outside and Shawn was off at the drop of the flag. Although there were two cautions, one for Robby who rolled in turn one and another for Tunk Berry who lost his power steering, there were no serious challenges for the lead. Rattlesnake is a small, tight quarter mile track and passing is difficult.
Finishing order for the feature is:
1st Shawn Lawler, 2nd Si Allen, 3rd Bruce Kimball, 4th Mike Kondrat, and 5th Matt Shuart. Tunk Berry and Robby Bodwell were 6th and 7th with mechanical problems.
The SCoNE Winged Warriors will make their next appearance on Friday, June 26th at Canaan Dirt Speedway www.canaandirtspeedway.com at the Canaan Fairgrounds, Canaan, NH. Racing starts at 6:30 pm. There are Thrills, Chills and unfortunately Spills. C’mon out and watch the fastest dirt racecars in New England.
