The Winged Warriors of SCoNE (Sprint Cars of New England) arrived at Bear Ridge Speedway www.bearridgespeedway.com  Saturday evening for their second race of the 2009 season at the The Ridge.  There were 10 of these alcohol gulping, fire breathing, 360 cubic inch cars on hand.  Racing started at approximately 6:00 pm.

Matt Shuart made the long, four plus hour trip from his home in New York to race with us again.  Also Clay Dow and Bob Giuliani made their first start since their crash at Rattlesnake Motordrome two weeks ago.  This crash was spectacular enough that pictures of it were posted in Area Auto Racing News (AARN).  Bob’s car has been repaired and Clay is driving a car belonging to Mike Kondrat.  Also new to SCoNE, Brian Whittemore, was driving Lacey Hanson’s 33 car for the evening.  Welcome Matt, Clay, Bob and Brian.

The track surface was tacky and hot laps went off without incident.

Finishing order for the 1st heat:
1st was the 60H of James Hanson, 2nd the 11 of Tunk Berry, 3rd the 33 of Brian Whittemore, 4th the 10 of Bruce Kimball and 5th the 18F of Matt Shuart.

Finishing order for the 2nd heat:
1st was the 6X of Mark Cole, 2nd the 59 of Clay Dow, 3rd the 88 of Si Allen and 4th the 38 of Bob Giuliani.   Mike Kondrat was 5th with mechanical problems.

During the second heat on the 2nd lap, Si and Mike got together and Mike was the looser.  As I saw it, Si started to spin in turn one, Mike went low to avoid him, ran out of room and his right front tire went over Si’s left front tire.  This put the nose of Mikes 5 car high in the air and as it was started down his right rear went over Si’s left front, driving the nose of the 5 car into the track.  There weren’t many front end parts on Mike’s car that weren’t broken. 

Shortly after the heats, the rain came. It was a pretty impressive rain storm and lasted approximately 15 to 20 minutes and then let up.  Track promoter Butch Elms said he could make the track raceable in a half hour once the rain stopped, but it had to stop.  Then it started again and this time it didn’t let up.  That was it for this Saturday night. Butch graciously gave us a date of July 25th to return to the Ridge to complete this evenings races.  He also provided us with another race date of August 29.  That will make four appearances for the SCoNE Winged Warriors at Bear Ridge Speedway for the 2009 racing season.
