Matt Shuart For His First SCoNE Win
Tunk Berry Wins The SCoNE Championship

The Winged Warriors of SCoNE (Sprint Cars of New England) arrived at Bear Ridge Speedway www.bearridgespeedway.com Saturday evening for another race of the 2009 season at the The Ridge.  There were 11 of these alcohol gulping, fire breathing, 360 cubic inch cars on hand.

Racing started a little late as the track required extra preparation because of all the rain Friday night and Saturday morning.  But Butch Elms and the Bear Ridge crew were up to the challenge.  I believe Bear Ridge was the only dirt track in New England to get their race in on Saturday.

David Knight of Marlborough, NH joined us with his 17 car for the first time this season.  Welcome David.

The track surface was very rough.  It was a constant battle for the track staff to keep the track in racing condition and they had the grader out off and on throughout the evening.  Hot laps went off without incident.

Finishing order for the 1st heat:
1st was the 18F of Matt Shuart, 2nd the 10 of Bruce Kimball, 3rd the 5 of Mike Kondrat, 4th the 88 of Si Allen, 5th the 6X of Mark Cole and 6th the 17 of David Knight.

Finishing order for the 2nd heat:
1st was the 18L of Shawn Lawler, 2nd the 59 of Clay Dow, 3rd the 11 of Tunk Berry, 4th the 33 of Lacey Hanson and 5th the 9 of Robby Bodwell.

During the first heat, Mark Cole bicycled in turns one and two and nearly went over.  Also Mike Kondrat lost oil pressure in his engine and was done for the night.

For the feature the track was tacky at first, then changed to loose in the turns with tacky straights.  This seems to lead to lots of wheel stands with the high power sprints.

Matt Shuart and Mark Cole started on the pole and Matt quickly took the lead.  On lap five, Lacey Hanson caught a berm, filled her front end with clay and snapped the front axle throwing her into Si Allen.  Lacey was done for the night but Si was able to continue.  The rest of the race was run caution free with lots of high wheel stands and passing.  Matt held on for the win with Tunk Berry in second and Shawn Lawler in third.

Finishing order for the feature:
1st was Matt Shuart, 2nd Tunk Berry, 3rd Shawn Lawler, 4th Bruce Kimball, 5th Clay Dow, 6th Robby Bodwell, 7th Si Allen and 8th Mark Cole.  David Knight was 9th and Lacey Hanson 10th with mechanical problems.

The finish of this race clinched the SCoNE points championship for Tunk Berry with 361 points.  Clay Dow was second with 336 points and Si Allen third with 334 points.  Congratulations, Tunk.

During the 2009 season SCoNE had eight feature winners for the ten races they managed to run, with only Clay Dow being a repeat winner.  Clay won three times this year.  Congratulations, Clay.

This coming weekend the Winged Warriors have a free weekend (September 4th and 5th).

The following weekend September 12th
will see the SCoNE winged warriors return to the Ridge
for their final race of the 2009 season.
There will be no points awarded at this race.

The winged sprints of SCoNE
are the fastest dirt race cars in New England.

C’mon out and watch’em.  You’ll be glad you did.
